Night Walk Into the Past

Take a journey into the year 1872 this August at Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site. Night Walk into the Past, the park’s annual living history program, will be presented throughout the grounds on August 7, 8, and 9 at 7 p.m.

This year’s Night Walk, “Diverse Perspectives: Life in Grant’s America,” focuses on the common people who were affected by President Grant’s policies and by the circumstances of the early 1870s. This entertaining evening of history will introduce visitors to the perspectives of normal people from all walks of life. A widowed sharecropper will discuss what it means to be free, while a Southern couple will expound upon what they’ve lost. A railway worker looks to the future of progress, while industrial workers debate the ever-quickening pace of society. Visitors will get insight into the lives of teachers and servants, of farmers and activists and soldiers. All of these men and women will express their views on Grant, politics, society, progress, and change. With humor and emotion, their stories will illuminate life in middle America in 1872.

Join us on one of these August evenings for a stroll through the grounds and a journey back to 1872. Night Walk into the Past is a free event, but reservations are required. Please call the park’s information desk at 314.842.3298 extension 245 to make reservations.
