Summertime Water Safety

Summertime is here and it's the time of year that we think about cooling down in lakes, rivers, and beaches.  Friends and family members gather to enjoy activities at water's edge and in the water—picnic, swim, fish, and just unwind in the great outdoors.  To ensure that all experience as much enjoyment as possible, be sure to plan properly and take adequate safety precautions.

Before going out:

- Check the weather forecast.
- Pack any gear you need from sunscreen to life jackets.
- Also pack your picnic safely—don't use glass containers.
- Consider the number in your party and plan accordingly for boat capacities and/or designate who will supervise younger children.

When you've arrived at the lake, river, or beach:

- Swim only in designated areas.
- Never swim alone.
- Children have a natural curiosity and attraction to water and can drown in only 1 inch of water.  Be sure someone is supervising the younger children in your group around the water's edge and in the water.
- Don't dive into lakes and rivers.  Hidden dangers like rocks and shallow water can cause injuries.
- When you are swimming long distances, swim parallel to shore.
- Don't turn your back to the water, where there's strong currents and/or rip tides, they can pull you out into the water.
- When boating—check equipment and electrical systems before heading out.
- Alcohol and water don't mix well—don't drink and drive a boat or swim.

Enjoy your summer safely!
